Nocturnal fishes that hide in dark areas during the day, Ala ihi emerge at night to feed. They have serrated scales and sharp venomous fin and head spines capable of delivering painful wounds if handled. Red body with a white arc behind the eye and iridescent blue stripes on the belly. It is said to be the favorite fish of King Kamehameha III (reigned 1825-1854). Eaten raw, salted, or broiled after drying.
This ala`ihi was speared off Maui by Xavier, an avid spearfisherman.
