Description
Awa or Milkfish are common in Hawaii just below the waterʻs surface where it feeds upon algae and plankton. Awa were traditionally raised in fishponds by native Hawaiians as a source of food. Its soft flesh is usually steamed to make fishcake.
This fish was speared by my friend Henry. Having a large spear wound in its flank, it wasnʻt a great subject for gyotaku, however I wanted to document its big beautiful tail.
Printed in the direct method of gyotaku onto unbleached unryu paper using an archival, printmaking ink. It is PH neutral (acid free). The paper measures 14 inches x 14 inches and has a soft deckle edge. Signed in pencil and stamped with my red chop in the lower right corner. Comes with a certificate of authenticity.
