The Jungle Centipede (Scolopendra subspinipes) is a species of centipede native to Hawaii. It can grow up to 12 inches long. It is found in damp, dark places like under rocks or leaves. Jungle centipedes are carnivorous and eat other bugs and even small lizards and frogs. They are known to be aggressive and the venomous bite of this centipede is extremely painful. They are a fierce predator that plays an important role in Hawaii’s ecosystem by serving as a food source for other animals and helping to break down organic matter. They do not carry any diseases that can harm people and they do not cause damage to property, but it’s best to stay away from them.
This centipede specimen was an intruder in the home of a friend who asked me if I was interested in using it as a gyotaku subject. Of course I said “absolutley!”. It was really fun to print. I made a handful of imprints onto a variety of handmade papers.
