Description

Celebrating the beauty and variety of Hawaii’s sea life using ink, rice papers, and locally caught fish.

This is a limited edition print of my original imprint of a Humuhumu hi`ukole (Pinktail triggerfish) using a traditional Japanese technique of fish printing known as gyotaku.

Dating from 18th century Japan, gyotaku is a technique where ink is carefully applied to a fish or other specimen, then an imprint is gently hand-rubbed onto paper or cloth. The result is a strikingly accurate record of the subject but without being too serious, allowing for accidents and happy surprises.

Each limited edition print is matched to the original with meticulous accuracy. Printed on heavyweight, textured, 100% cotton fine art paper using archival pigment-based inks to guarantee that your print will last a lifetime.

The edges of the paper are deckled, and can be framed either behind a mat or “floated” above a backing to show off the paper’s deckled edge. Elegantly crafted and uniquely Hawaiian. Each print is signed, numbered, and stamped with my red chop.

My hope is that my work helps raise awareness and appreciation for Hawaii’s most magnificent and vulnerable resource. A portion of the proceeds from each sale is donated to local non-profit organizations that are working to restore healthy reefs and native fish populations. Whether gracing the walls of your home or becoming the centerpiece of your art collection, our gyotaku art is a profound tribute to the land, the sea, and the sustainable ethos that defines the Hawaiian way of life.
