Description

Squirrelfish, or `ala`ihi as they are known locally, are nocturnal fishes that hide in dark areas during the day, emerging at night to feed. They have large scales and sharp venomous fin and head spines capable of delivering painful wounds if handled. Popular for eating and said to have been a favorite fish of king Kamehameha III (reigned 1825-1854). Eaten raw, salted, or broiled after drying.

This is an original, one-of-a-kind, hand-rubbed impression taken from the freshly caught fish. Printed using the direct method of gyotaku using an archival, water soluble, printmaking ink that is oil-based and rubbed onto mulberry paper. It is PH neutral (acid free). The paper measures 11 x 18 and has a soft deckle edge, which looks great when “floated” in a frame, rather than mounting it under a mat.

Titled “ala ihi”” in pencil on the lower left corner. Signed in pencil and stamped with my red chop in the lower right corner. Includes a signed certificate of authenticity.
