Description
In North America we know flatfish as halibut, sole and flounder. They are highly valued as food around the world. Hawaii’s waters host about 20 flatfish species separated into three groups: left-eyed flounders (which lie on their right side), right-eyed flounders and soles, which are all right-eyed.
Belonging to the left-eyed flounder family is the stunning flatfish called the pāki`i, in Hawaiian. This flounder is a master at camouflage with protruding eyes that enable the fish to hide from predators and ambush prey at the same time.
Generously provided by local, recreational fisherman, Ricki Cole. Imprinted on 100% Habotai silk using the indirect (Kansetsu-ho) gyotaku technique. In the traditional method of Kansetsu-ho, silk is carefully adhered to the fish, then used as a relief printing plate. Inks are then delicately applied in multiple layers of color. It was then mounted to Xuan rice paper backing paper. Measures 10.5 x 16 inches.
This is an original one-of-a-kind gyotaku measuring 10.5 x 16 inches. Titled and signed in pencil, then stamped with my red seal in the lower right corner. It will arrive with a signed certificate of authenticity.
